“… teamwork and training rewarded the crew with healing, hope, companionship, physical strength and spirit.”  Donald C. McKenzie, MD, PhD, a sports medicine physician and an exercise physiologist from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, who formed the first breast cancer survivor dragon boat crew in 1996. Dr. McKenzie revealed that dragon boating’s focus on physical activity and teamwork assists in mastectomy recovery and the prevention of lymphedema, as well as provides positive psychological and social side effects. Today, there are over 200 breast cancer survivor teams around the world. Baltimore’s team is the first of its kind in Maryland.
